Freedom, Fashion & amaPiano: Basha Uhuru 2025 Levels Up

This year, Basha Uhuru isn’t just keeping the culture alive, it’s evolving it. The Amapiano Summit is officially part of the 2025 Creative Week lineup — and it’s shaping up to be a game-changer. Hosted over two days, with a live showcase on 28 June, this summit is giving the genre that’s taken the world by storm the respect, platform, and future-facing dialogue it deserves.

If you thought Basha was only about music, think again. This year’s Creative Week is a full creative ecosystem. We’re talking fashion, film, cannabis innovation, illustration, health, wellness, and next-gen tech — all brought together in Joburg’s most iconic freedom space.

Football royalty Shakes Mashaba and MEC for Finance & Economic Development Lebogang Maile are leading the AfriMasterclass, giving us game — literally and figuratively — on leadership, economics, and empowerment in the African creative economy.

Sophie Ndaba is curating The Business of Fashion, where legends like Sun Goddess and Floyd Avenue Apparel founders will unpack what it takes to build iconic African fashion brands from the ground up.

Cinema lovers? You’re covered. The Films of Freedom Film Festival, curated by Mmabatho & Refilwe Montsho of Monday Pictures, is rolling out seven films that speak to resilience, freedom, and the stories we carry — in true Basha form.

Meanwhile, over at The Arts Company Soweto, the 76/25 Print Art Exhibition returns for its third edition, in partnership with the City of Joburg’s Art, Culture, and Heritage Department, tracing freedom through ink, prints, and powerful visual storytelling.

For the curious and conscious, the Creative Hemp & Cannabis Workshop by REM Initiative will unpack the real state of South Africa’s green economy — no fluff, just facts. Then there’s the Symbols & Mythology poetry workshop, co-presented by New Acropolis and UNESCO, blending spoken word with spiritual depth and creative intelligence.

And because creativity doesn’t live in one lane, the Creative Sector Youth Expo is turning up with everything from gaming, tech, and animation, to wellness and illustration. It’s a space where the next creative leaders aren’t just seen — they’re launched.

To top it all off, Basha Uhuru is already teasing the vibe for later in the year. Sounds of Freedom Music Festival drops in September, with a lineup that’s already looking insane: Mthandeni, Kid Fonque, Toss, Admiral & Jah Seed, QueDJ, DJ Cindo, and a very special performance from this year’s Basha Uhuru Music Legacy Award winner — the legends, BOOM SHAKA.

This isn’t just a creative week. It’s the culture, curated.

Tap in. Pull up. Be part of it.
